Head of School Update
It is with great pleasure that Oxbridge Academy introduces Dr. Ralph Maurer as Oxbridge Academy’s Head of School, starting July 1, 2018. Dr. Maurer comes to us from serving as the Headmaster of The International School Nido de Aguilas (Nido), an independent English-language international day school in Santiago, Chile. Nido has a 1,750-member student body (58% of whom are from outside Chile, with 17% from the U.S.), encompassing Pre-K through 12th grades. During his tenure, Dr. Maurer led the school’s strategic planning process; strengthened the school’s project-based learning program; developed strong arts and athletic programs; created a professional development academy; and established the school’s first endowment fund. He is a regular contributor to the global discussion regarding innovation in independent schools, presenting at the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) annual conference and participating in the NAIS Institute for New Heads.
Dr. Maurer will join Oxbridge as Head of School-Elect beginning in January 2018. During this time period, Mr. John Klemme will remain as Head of School and maintain full responsibility for running the school. This extra time on campus will give Dr. Maurer an opportunity to become familiar with the school’s culture, faculty, and student body. He will spend his time getting to know parents, students, and staff, and reviewing the school’s mission statement, goals, curriculum, and financials. Additionally, Dr. Maurer will spend his time meeting members of the community, taking an active leadership role in the local, regional, and international communities.
In April 2017, John Klemme, current Head of School and Academic Dean, announced that he had decided to return to his former position as senior staff member and English teacher at Oxbridge. He will remain in his current position through June 2018 before transitioning back to his teaching role.
In April, we began a worldwide search for a new Head of School retaining the services of the Boston-based firm of Carney Sandoe & Associates (CSA), the leading independent school search firm. The Board of Trustees established a Search Committee, its members representing parents, faculty and trustees, who worked with CSA to assure a thorough, professional, and successful search.
The position attracted more than 100 interested candidates from across the globe. Over the past six months, the Search Committee worked tirelessly to evaluate candidates and conduct interviews to refine the list of qualified applicants. The Committee then invited top candidates to visit the Oxbridge campus in August to tour the school, meet with parents, students, and faculty, and to learn more about our local community. The Search Committee reached a unanimous decision on a Head of School candidate, and on October 10, the Board of Trustees unanimously accepted its recommendation.
Prior to his time at Nido, Dr. Maurer was a faculty member and administrator at the Freeman School of Business at Tulane University, where he was in charge of the entrepreneurship curriculum, and was one of Tulane’s primary public figures on the subject. While at Tulane, Dr. Maurer served as the founding executive director of the New Orleans Startup Fund, raising more than $4 million in investment capital to help rebuild the city after Hurricane Katrina by stimulating early stage high-growth entrepreneurship, including funding the development of Kickboard, a classroom management software company. Additionally, he did consulting work for Daimler-Benz Research & Technology and was a co-founder of consulting firm EMH Strategy. At EMH, he and his partners developed strategic, financial, operational, and feasibility plans for a variety of education institutions, including the Emeril Lagasse Foundation, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts secondary school, and Cafe Reconcile community center educational facility, as well as working on projects for the Louisiana Department of Education. He played an instrumental role in launching The Idea Lab at St. Martin’s Episcopal School (PK-12).
Dr. Maurer is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in communications studies from Northwestern University, a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. in management science and engineering from Stanford University.
We are excited and confident that Dr. Maurer’s depth of experience and commitment to excellence in education will provide for many exceptional years to come, with even more innovations and opportunities for our students, faculty, staff, and community partners. He had opportunities to lead other schools but saw Oxbridge as a community where he could make a difference as the school matures.
