The national Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has awarded junior Sergio Maldonado a $10,000 flight training scholarship to the flight school of his choice. He plans to spend the summer earning his private pilot's license at Lantana-based Airmax Aviation. The AOPA awards about $1 million in scholarships annually, ranging from $2,500 to $14,000. They are not easy to get. Last year, the organization received more than 4,000 applications and awarded just 124 scholarships.
One of Maldonado's goals upon completing the course is to give back to Oxbridge. "Next year," he says, "I wish to pass my knowledge and expertise to Oxbridge aviation students in the 101/201 courses by becoming a teacher's assistant for Dr. Hinkley's classes." He adds that, "In addition, I hope to take another independent study to advance my flight skills, and make progress towards earning my next rating during the remainder of my time at Oxbridge.”
