Congratulations to ThunderWolves Gerald Valvano, '27, and Cormac Toner, '28, who finished second and fourth, respectively in the Junior Physics & Astronomy Division of the Palm Beach Regional Science & Engineering Fair.
Valvano's project, titled Arepa Hydraulics, investigated the effects of different liquids on the efficiency of a hydraulic press. He designed his “Arepa Press” and built it using an acrylic 3D printer. The goal of his project was to create a prototype hydraulic press that he can use to flatten arepa dough.
Toner's project, titled The Drone That Flew, explored different types of drone propellers and their effects on the energy efficiency of drones. He tested different propeller designs with varying numbers of blades to see which one could keep the drone working with the least battery consumption. He chose to do this project because of his love for coding and fascination with drones.
