Alum Brings Real-World Business Insight to FEI Class

Oxbridge students in Free Enterprise Institute (FEI) classes recently got a real-time lesson in global economics from alum Michael Benarde ’15, co-founder of Nightcapit LLC. Michael, who started the company in 2019 with his sister Shirah Benarde ’20, returned to campus to speak about the challenges and complexities of international manufacturing and current U.S. trade policy. Nightcap, featured on the popular TV program Shark Tank in 2021, began with an innovative product designed to prevent drink-spiking—a scrunchie that doubles as a drink cover—and has grown into a nationally-recognized safety brand. With manufacturing based in China, Michael shared how recent changes in U.S. tariff policies have directly affected their business operations and future planning.
The visit provided students with a unique opportunity to hear how classroom concepts play out in real-world business scenarios, particularly as in international trade, entrepreneurship, and government regulation. Michael’s firsthand experience added a compelling and timely layer to their FEI conversation. Thanks to Michael Benarde for coming in to share his thoughts and expertise on such a timely topic.
